Search Tips

When you select a discipline, your search is limited to that particular termbank.

If a discipline is not selected, the whole TermFinder database is searched for your query.

Use wildcards in the search string:

•the asterisk (*) wildcard searches for a sequence of 0 or more characters in a string; Ex: am*ba finds ameba or amoeba

•the underscore (_) wildcard searches for exactly 1 character in a string; Ex: c_ll finds cell or call

•wildcards can be used for browsing; Ex: c* finds all the words starting with c

Grammar: noun phrase
plural: transcription factors
Definition: a protein that binds to DNA and helps control gene expression by promoting transcription
Example:
1. Transcription factors allow activation and inhibition of many different genes, and each nuclear factor binds onto DNA at a specific nucleotide sequence.

2. Binding sites for the same transcription factor can appear upstream from more than one gene, so one nuclear factor can simultaneously activate more than one gene.
