Search Tips

When you select a discipline, your search is limited to that particular termbank.

If a discipline is not selected, the whole TermFinder database is searched for your query.

Use wildcards in the search string:

•the asterisk (*) wildcard searches for a sequence of 0 or more characters in a string; Ex: am*ba finds ameba or amoeba

•the underscore (_) wildcard searches for exactly 1 character in a string; Ex: c_ll finds cell or call

•wildcards can be used for browsing; Ex: c* finds all the words starting with c

Definition: a short sequence of DNA that is involved in the formation of bodily segmentation during embryonic development
Example:
1. Different regions of an embryo express different sets of homeobox genes that specify which segment a cell belongs to.

2. Homeobox genes are activated by triangulating morphogens in an early stage of the developing embryo.
Usage Note: In chordates homeobox genes are also called hox genes.
