  • Definition: a network of fibres throughout the cytoplasm of the cell that helps to maintain the cell's shape. This internal framework is composed largely of actin filaments and microtubules.

    There are two sets of genes for the contractile proteins actin and myosin. One set operates in the cytoskeleton, where they are responsible for the internal movement of organelles and for the structural integrity of the cell.
