    codons
  • Definition: any sequence of three adjacent nucleotides in DNA or RNA. Most codons specify the insertion of an amino acid in a particular position in a polypeptide chain, but a small number signal the end of the polypeptide.
  • Example:
    1. Many amino acids are coded by several codons.

    2. Using its anti-codon, tRNA can bind onto codons in mRNA corresponding to the amino acid that it is carrying in a process called translation.
