    ~ the process through which change occurs in a chromosome, either through an alteration in the nucleotide sequence of the DNA coding for a gene or through a change in the physical arrangement of a chromosome
  • Example:
    1. Some Drosophila have a mutation in the Antennapedia homeobox gene which causes legs to form on head segments.

    2. Multiple alleles result from different mutations of the same gene.
