  • Grammar: adjective
  • Definition: referring to a pair of DNA bases, where the presence of one base determines the identity of the base on the opposite strand, e.g. adenine on one strand of DNA allows only thymine on the other
  • Example:
    1. Whatever the sequence of bases along one strand, the sequence of bases on the other strand must be complementary to it.

    2. In a DNA molecule there are two complementary base pairs - adenine and thymine, and guanine and cytosine; adenine will only make a chemical bond to thymine and guanine will only bond to cytosine.
